How good of you to visit.

Knowing there must be some form of exhibitionist in all of us, especially here, on the ‘Net, this is one of my humble ostentations, hopefully to share with you the music I enjoy playing so much.  I make no pretenses that I belong up there with the Jazz Masters: Prez, ‘Trane, Newk, Stitt, Bird, Jug, Dex, Yusef, Ben, but what I try to accomplish is a sense of their spirit.

As a Gemini (no, that is not a religion), I have the mythical trait of one who has dual personalities, and judging by my past, there is much evidence of that.  For instance, when I was a busy TV/Radio, Sports/News, anchor/reporter, my main concern was which jazz club to visit after a day of chasing around Ali, or Dali.  Though famous people are interesting, there is nothing more fascinating than being on a bandstand with a rhythm section perking behind you, pushing, taunting, flirting, kicking, driving, making one’s viscera pour out.   I enjoy that even more than getting an exclusive interview with a hot celebrity or an award for excellence as a broadcaster.  It was always plain to me that music was the real love, while the on-camera exposure, though enjoyable and rewarding, was runner-up.

Unfortunately,  in my teens when I began to explore the saxophone, I was not a very good disciplinarian (hot chicks were more important than hot licks), and foolishly believed I didn’t need to study too long or hard to learn how to play the tenor.  Duh.

It wasn’t until decades, and many sit-ins later (three times with Lionel Hampton) that I began to pay more attention to scales, chords, tonality, breathing, and, the most important word for any improvement: practice.

As for my nom de jeu/alias/stage name, BBTenor; there are too many other Brian Maddens out there, including one of my sons who is on iTunes, same as I.  BBTenor keeps that dual personality thing going, too.
